Before diving into \nindividual sounds within words (phonemic awareness), we teach children \nto pay attention to more obvious sounds. We start with environmental \nnoises, then move into sentences, whole words, and then syllables. Only \nafter a child can divide words into syllables do we start teaching the <em>phonemic awareness<\/em> part of our curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A child with good phonemic awareness, who is ready to start learning phonics, will have mastered the skills of <a href=\"https:\/\/sightwords.com\/phonemic-awareness\/basics\/#blending\">blending<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sightwords.com\/phonemic-awareness\/basics\/#splitting\">splitting<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sightwords.com\/phonemic-awareness\/basics\/#substituting\">substituting<\/a> the sounds in words \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/sightwords.com\/phonemic-awareness\/basics\/#phonemes\">phonemes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sightwords.com Phonemic awareness is the ability to split up and rearrange individual sounds within words.
